Stress Management

The Stress of Life

Stress has become an increasingly common part of daily life. Stress itself can be either positive or negative. It can motivate us to try harder, it can focus our attention and energy and it can help us to accomplish our goals. On the other hand, it can decrease our health and increase feelings of being overwhelmed and inadequate. We live in a society that bombards us with demands for our attention, energy, and resources. We no longer have the safe havens that once allowed us to rejuvenate and refresh ourselves because work, social media and constant connection have found their ways into our homes.

We All Face Challenges

Just like adults, children experience a variety of difficulties and stressors. One main difference is that children find it more difficult to determine if they are the cause of the stressors they are experiencing. They are much more likely to blame themselves. They also have fewer tools for both managing and expressing their emotions. Because of this an experience of distress is often expressed through

The Growth of a Child

Nothing has a greater impact on our well-being than our families. For many of us it is easier to struggle ourselves than to see our children struggle and we live in an increasingly complex and challenging world for our children. Our children have many more pressures, expectations and opportunities than most of us had as children. There is more time spent isolated socially while engaging virtually with others. There is reduced oversight of our children as trends toward two working parents continue to expand. Children and teens are exposed to information and choices that many of us didn’t face until adulthood. All of these factors combine to place greater stress on the family.

The pandemic accelerated a trend that was already taxing our ability to disconnect from the pressures, demands and distractions of life. By forcing many people to work from home and reducing access to outside activities the stress load was increased. It also enhanced feelings of uncertainty about the future, unpredictability in our lives is highly stressful for many people. There was also a loss of socialization as many people stopped meeting face to face with others.
