ADHD Counseling

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a highly genetic disorder, meaning there is a strong correlation between a child having ADHD and other relatives having it as well. Studies show between 40 and 60% of children with ADHD also have a parent with ADHD. Much of the challenge of ADHD is that it impacts “Executive Functioning Skills”, which include attention, memory, motivation, effort, impulsivity, social skills and more. These skills drive our success across a wide range of topics and abilities, making it very valuable to both understand and work with. Perhaps that is why it is among both the most commonly studied and diagnosed disorders in children and adolescents

How We Can Help!

Thrive Family Counseling can help with ADHD. ADHD can be very frustrating for both the individual with the ADHD and for those around that person in their life. It can be easy to feel like the child is deliberately misbehaving or your spouse must not care because they are never paying attention. As study sessions with children stretch out or discipline issues mount, tension and discouragement can as well. What are the boundaries? What should they be? Are we being too lenient or too strict? These can be frequently asked questions of parents or loved ones with ADHD. The person experiencing ADHD can feel stupid or broken in some way. They can question why everything is so much harder for them. They can easily start to resent and avoid school as well. As a parent it can be all the more confusing because you can watch your child hyper-focus on something that really grabs their interest. Why can’t they do that with school or other responsibilities? What’s really going on. If any of this sounds familiar to you, then it may be time to seek professional help.

What Does Help Look Like?

The counselors Thrive Family Counseling are here to help individuals both old and young as well as parents understand and manage ADHD. ADHD can be difficult to distinguish at times between normal childhood activity levels and difficulty paying attention and something clinical. Additionally, stress, trauma, anxiety, and depression can also cause symptoms that may be confused with ADHD. We can teach individuals and parents strategies for managing the struggles associated with ADHD, implementing treatments that may include learning self-soothing skills, organizational skills, managing activity levels, learning how to socialize with others, mindfulness training, learning about emotions and how to interact with these emotions.
