Premarital Counseling

Why Get Premarital Counseling?

There are high emotions, excitement, confusion, and fun when two people decide they want to spend the rest of their life together. I am sure if you are engaged now, the statement of “it’s not just the two of you getting married, it’s the family,” is beginning to ring true. Trying to understand what it means to be part of the family is exciting and can fly by quickly.

Even with the excitement of proposal, engagement, and looking forward to the wedding, there can be difficulties. It is not uncommon for a couple, planning to be married, to already see areas needing improvement. This can come from family dynamics, past hurts, present hang-ups, creating a blended family, personalities, and other factors. Premarital counseling can help begin the process of healing and working on these issues for each person to feel completely comfortable moving forward.

Premarital Counseling Benefits

One of the nice things about premarital counseling is that it gives a pause in the fast pace time of your life to have and promote intentional conversations about the important things. Communication, connection, and compromise are the most important aspects of marriage. Maintaining or restimulating those aspects in the relationship right now can help the marriage thrive. This can be one way you can start the marriage off on the right path.

Why Get Premarital Counseling?

Whether you are stable in your relationship and looking for ways to take things to the next level, facing an unexpected challenge, or on the brink of divorce and needing support, there are options to help you find a healthy path forward. There are few things that can be as devastating or as fulfilling as a meaningful relationship with a committed partner. But, great relationships don’t just happen. They are the result of purposeful and consistent work. It is ironic that it generally takes more time and effort to get a driver’s license than a marriage license. Many people have little or no formal training in how to be good at being in a relationship. The work needed for great relationships includes time, investment, thoughtfulness, generosity, learning, experience, and consistency. The rewards of great relationships, however, greatly outweigh the costs/the work involved. The rewards can include connection, understanding, fun, closeness, intimacy, fulfillment, stability, health, longevity, passion, memories, shared meaning, and many others.

Collaborating with Your Minister

Many couples are connected to a religious group or seeking to have a local church perform the wedding. If this is true for you, it is common for ministers to ask the couple to either do their premarital program or seek premarital counseling. Sometimes, the minister or bishop views the preparation process as a collaborative effort between him, the therapist, and the couple. Our therapists are familiar and experienced in these efforts. There is a beautiful thing about one's community gathering around you in support of one of the greatest transitions in life.
